Overview

Iraqi Airways is Iraq’s largest airline, the country’s national carrier and a member of the Arab Air Transport Association. Established in 1946 by the Iraqi Aviation Association, it has used British aircraft from its inception. In the 1970s, the United States approved Iraqi Airways planes to use John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The Gulf War did not affect the Iraqi Airways flights, however, they came to a halt after the Second Gulf War due to the UN’s international blockade on Iraq. Prior to 2003, most of Iraq’s passenger aircraft had been hidden or transferred to other countries such as Tunisia, Jordan and Iran. In 2003, Iraqi Airways decided to resume international flights, the first of which took off on October 3, 2004, from Baghdad to Tehran.

Now, Iraqi Airways has regular flights to Damascus, Amman, Kuwait, Beirut, Cairo, Tehran, Mashhad, Dubai, Istanbul, Antalya, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Athens, Karachi, Manama, Frankfurt, London in addition to domestic flights between Iraq’s major cities.
